Gyeongsan, promoted to the city status in 1995, is adjacent to Daegu in the west, Cheongdo in the south, and Yeongcheon in the northeast. As of now, the city takes up 2.2% of the total land surface area of the North Gyeongsang Province with an area of 411.8§´. As of December, 2005, it has the population of 231,677 with 84,463 households and is divided into 2 towns, 6 subcounties and 7 dongs.
The climate in Gyeongsan area is warming continental and similar to that of Daegu area. The warm continental climate between the Taebaek and Sobaek Mountain Ranges is generally dominated by the properties of the basin, featuring less rainfall, higher temperature during summer seasons and larger difference in temperature between summer and winter, particularly, around the Geumho River. The amount of rainfall over Gyeongsan area is less the average yearly rainfall of Korea, due to its topographic influence.
Topographically, Gyeongsan is located in the southwest of the North Gyeongsang Province, and is so close to Daegu Metropolitan City that it is rapidly becoming an ideal multi-functional rural-urban city with excellence in educational, cultural, industrial and residential environments.

With respect to transportation, Gyeongbu Expressway, Gyeongbuseon and Daeguseon railroads, industrial roads and national roads pass through this city, and the time taken to reach Daegu International Airport from the city center is just 20 minutes. The Daegu's subway line also expects to be extended to the city. In Gyeongsan area, there are 13 colleges and universities, including Yeungnam University, Daegu Catholic University, Taegu University, Kyungil University, and Daegu Haany University, where approximately 110,000 students are studying. Also, within Jilyang and Jain industrial complexes are about 1,600 companies with 22,000 employees and the total amount of their annual exports was US$427 million and is continuously increasing.
Historically, Gyeongsan, the base area of Apyangsoguk community prior to the Three Kingdoms period, is a place where a large number of famous people were born, including the great monk Wonhyo, the great scholar Seolchong and the great scholar Ilyeon. In city, moreover, there are a variety of cultural relics, including the groups of tombs in Imdang-dong and Jongyeong-dong areas.
Gyeongsan has valuable tourist attractions of great scenery around Gwanbong stone budda, so-called Gattbawi Budda (National treasure No.431) which wears Korean traditional cylindrical hat. The Budda, located at Daehan village, Wachon subcounty is especially famous for making one's wish come true if anyone earnestly prays for him.
